Yes. It is based on a true story, albeit loosely. All "based on a true story" movies can be categorized as loosely based on some fact or real events ..... Oh, and Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer is only at 14% which made me think my initial impression of the movie was pretty spot on in saying that I hated it. A lot.
Imagine a scenario in which you are truly haunted by something that you consider evil. Then the government gets involved. General and future President Andrew Jackson, that is. This is the scenario that An American Haunting is based on, a supposed true story that comes out of Robertson County, Tennessee. It is an actual story, however, denoting many skeptics of its authenticity. One such news article says as much here. Yet, there were newspaper articles on this phenomena. One was in The Cincinnati Enquirer in 1894, which I have linked my own clipping below of the section on The Bell Witch. There is also a rather large Wikipedia here.
So, no matter whether you are a movie-goer or not, The Bell Witch is a topic of conversation on both sides of the isle and neither side knows whether or not the thing is true!
